As far as I can see there is no definate record of how Yorkshire buttons came to being but the making of buttons is likely to have started out as a side-line for Yorkshire cutlers in the 1600s, but by the second half of the century the occupation was established independently: 1669 Peter Elston, button-maker, Fewston.

Button making is thought to have started in Dorset when Abraham Case brought examples of fabric buttons back from Europe.  The cottage industry flourished in Dorset, but other regions developed their own styles with Macclesfield and Yorkshire amongst them.
